Have you ever wondered how to plant a tree? It is very simple. That is, as long as you are following the proper guidelines. Let’s dig in. There are many advantages to planting a tree.
- Trees add beauty to your lawn and your home.
- They keep the area around your home cooler in the summertime.
- And there is no question that planting trees add landscape value – more-so than homes that don’t have trees.
4 Essential Steps When
Planting a Tree in the Low Country
#1 SPACE: Take this word of precaution: Trees that grow over approximately 50’ shouldn’t be placed anywhere near power lines, trees, driveways, patios, sidewalks or structures.
#2 SHADE OR SUNLIGHT: When shopping around, pay close attention to what trees should be placed in the shade or sunlight. Otherwise, you’ll waste money. Trees that are meant for the shade will not thrive in the sun and vice versa.
#3 TREE TYPE: The species of tree truly makes a difference and can mean value or no value when it comes to home appraisal. For example, Jap Maples and Dwarf Conifer Trees can add good value. You might be surpised to know that there are actually trees that can devalue the appraisal of your home in the Lowcountry. Trees such as Holly and Cottonwood can devalue your landscape due to unpredictable and brittle wood.
#4 DIGGING HOLES:
- Dig a hole 3 times wider than the root ball of your tree.
- Take a good look at the tree and choose the best side of it to face your chosen direction.
- When topping off with soil, check the trunk of the tree often so that it stands straight.
- Use one stake for small trees and 2 to 3 stakes for larger trees.
- And remember: Planting a small hole, instead of a large one, means that roots will outgrow the hole.
